Group My research group is currently studying random knots and polygons. Our goal is to use the differential, algebraic, and symplectic geometry of polygon spaces to answer questions about geometric properties of random polygons. For instance, using an identification between the Grassmannian manifold G_2(C^n) and the manifold of closed n-gons of length 2 in 3-space, we were recently able to find an exact formula for the expected total curvature of a random n-gon. We organized the 2013 Georgia Topology Conference on these topics. We are also currently working on a census of knot and link diagrams with the goal of gathering experimental evidence on questions like: what is the distribution of knot types among all 8 crossing knot diagrams? The group currently includes graduate students Tom Needham, Michael Berglund and Harrison Chapman, postdoctoral fellow Clayton Shonkwiler, and faculty members Jason Parsley and Matt Mastin. We also work with Tetsuo Deguchi, Alexander Grosberg, Rob Kusner, and Alessia Mandini.
